hard to remove wax coating
I bought this cast iron tea kettle because it's small size would enable me to use it on the ledge of our wood-burning fireplace insert in spite of the fact I knew it's not preseasoned. Having purchased cast iron cookware in the past and seasoned it myself I thought it would be no problem. I was totally unprepared for the difficulty of removing its wax coating. "Scrub with hot water and detergent," are the instructions. Absolutely did not work. I thought I'd gotten the wax off but the toxic-smelling odor coming out of my oven when I tried to season it showed the wax was not only still present but possibly poisonous. Putting ammonia in it (and sticking it outside so I wouldn't have to deal with the fumes), followed by more scrubbing with copper mesh and a *lot* of elbow grease seemed to do the trick. Definitely not worth the time....Be forewarned. However I love the way it looks. It's a beautiful design and now that I see just how small it is I think the fireplace insert shelf would have handled the the two-quart kettle. And that comes pre-seasoned. Wish I'd realized that ahead of time.
Pros:
Durable, Attractive Design, Easy To Assemble
Cons:
Hard To Clean, wax coating almost impossible to remove

Cute little "Hobbit" tea kettle.
I gave this to my son for Christmas. He is a "Lord of the Rings" fan and likes this little kettle. It needs to be carefully dried so it does not rust. It is priced very reasonably.

Tea
